Questions
Do babies need their immunisations?
In line with Government guidelines, we are happy to accept babies into classes before they are immunised. For more information visit www.immunisation.org.uk.
What is the ‘diving reflex’?
Babies are born with the diving reflex which means when they are fully submerged in water they will automatically hold their breath up to 3 seconds. This reflex is fully active up until 6-9 months old, after this lessons will train your baby to have a ‘dive response’. During the course your baby will learn to use their diving reflex and make their first swimming movements towards you.
Do I have to put my baby under water?
No, we understand that not all parents like putting their baby underwater as it goes against their natural instincts. Little Splashers lessons will never force you or your baby to do anything that your are uncomfortable with. However, you will surprised what your baby will be capable of. A ‘wet test’ is always performed first to act as a check to ensure baby is happy and ready to swim under water. Babies and toddlers become ready for this ‘cue’ and can communicate if they want to swim under water. Swimming underwater if introduced in a fun safe way will increase your babies confidence and you’ll be amazed how they will want to ‘jump in’ and surface and then turn to the side, ready to do it again.
Can my partner join in the lesson too?
It depends on the numbers in the class, you may be asked to share the class, Mum one week, Dad the next. But, there is plenty of room on the side to watch.
What about illness?
Please do not bring your child swimming if they are unwell or have any contagious illness (e.g. conjunctivitis or chicken pox, sickness or diarrhoea).
What should babies wear?
To avoid any accident babies must wear a double system, by this we mean a aqua nappy this can be disposable or one that can be washed and a tight fitting swimming costume.
Where do you do the swimming lessons?
They are held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays Fridays, Saturdays. Mondays and Fridays in Coventry, Tuesdays and Saturdays in Leamington and a Thursday in Rugby. See when and where page for full details.
